Let’s examine ways you can monotize expertise by turning it into various products that your audience would love to buy.

What are Your Unique Gifts & Talents?

Often as a business owner we start a business based on a unique hobby, talent or skill that we have and we absolutely love to do. You may be a makeup artist, a hairdresser, a cake baker, a jewelry designer, a business coach, a life coach or in some other creative type of business.

One of the major mistakes that I made in my career was about 10 years ago when I had a photography business. I really loved photography. It was my creative outlet and a way for me to express myself and make money at the same time. I thought that I had hit the jackpot because I got to wake up every day doing what I love serving people.

One of the reasons why I was able to build a successful photography business was because I loved it so much that I really invested in myself and became an excellent photographer. Plus my passion for my clients showed through and I always wanted to deliver an amazing experience for them and a top quality product.

My Mistake

But looking back there is one mistake that I made and that was not building the business to run without me in the day today.

I could only make money if I was pushing the camera button on a photo shoot. So over a period of seven years working nights, weekends, holidays, and special occasions when other people were enjoying their families I began to feel resentful and like I was missing out on life. So while my business was flourishing my personal life was suffering.

We Need Multiple Sources Of Income To Achieve Freedom

I made a mistake in that business in that I didn’t have multiple sources of income. I failed to create different revenue streams. And looking back I realize that I left so much money on the table and missed out on lots of opportunities because I was so busy working in the business that I failed to work on the business and see it as an empire that could be used to give myself freedom.

Now that I am on my second entrepreneurial journey I have it figured out. I have many types of ways that

This was a pivotal moment for me. After my book Amplify Your Business started attracting media attention, I knew I had figured it out!

people can do business with me. I have multiple streams of income and I have turned my expertise and my unique gifts and talents into products that other people can buy. Because I’ve taken the time to do this I sell books online on Amazon.com while I sleep, sell memberships into my online marketing Academy, and I have turned my unique approach into a proven process that can be taught to other professionals. I now have systems built into my company where other people can execute my vision and execute my dream freeing me up to be with my family, involved in the missions at my church, and giving back to my entrepreneurial community in large and meaningful ways.

Reach & Empower A Larger Audience

By taking the time to develop books, courses, workshops and experiences I’m also able to reach more people with my message. I’m able to empower more women to build businesses that give them the freedom to continue to be awesome wives, mothers, and members of their community.

I wish I would have known then what I know now : that productizing my expertise and monetizing it into multiple revenue streams and different types of products is the best way that I can make use of my talents and serve not only my business audience but my family as well. I have found new levels of enjoyment in my career and new ways of finding time for my family.

Don’t Just Trade Time For Money, Serve Multiple People At A Time

So if you’re finding yourself frustrated by trading time for money and trading your services for a paycheck and wondering if there is a better way I’m here to tell you that there is. You just need to take the time to think about how your business could be set up for success so that you could turn your approach and how you do things into a process that could be taught to other people or built into a scalable business with products where you could serve more than one person at a time.

Example:

If you are a makeup artist and you’re only able to generate income when you have a new bride in your makeup chair please consider taking your expertise and creating different ways for people to learn how to apply makeup from you. You could simply create an e-book and sell it on your website or you could create an online course with training videos or you could create a hands-on workshop experience teaching available on itunespeople the makeup application techniques. You could also become a speaker and take your message to the main stage empowering women to become a more beautiful version of themselves and to love how they look and feel.

Create Products To Make Money Efficiently

In general, productizing your expertise so that you can monetize into different revenue streams is all about thinking about how you can serve a larger population while creating freedom in your career and life.

Shifting Your Mindset

This approach of productize in your expertise will require a mindset shift for you. You will need to think beyond your existing business model of trading time for money and begin to see a new bold vision for your career as an educator, entertainer or inspiring thought leader in your industry.

Take Action

An action that I would like for you to take this week is to simply think of one way, one new idea that you could do to to translate your expertise into a product. This could be setting the bold vision to write a book, create an online course, hold a training event, or simply write a small e-book and sell it on your website.

Authority Marketing Wins

What if I told you that there were very important ways of marketing your business without advertising that could attract a new audience to you and help you build your tribe of the perfect leads?

I recently had two major wins by leveraging Authority Marketing.

Each month our agency publishes a new blog post and shares the blog article with our newsletter subscriber list. On our list is the Publisher of a local business magazine. Within 5 minutes of hitting send on our newsletter, Joe, the publisher of the magazine emailed me back to ask if he could use a section of my article and republish it in his magazine giving me full credit. Of course I said yes! What a great way for me to pick up additional valuable media exposure at no cost to me. 

Another win I experienced leveraging authority marketing is that I held a live webinar on personal branding. I had about 45 people register for the webinar and 22 actually joined me. From those 22 individuals I was able to book 7 new coaching prospect calls. So, by providing value in the webinar, I earned 7 new leads!

Positioning Yourself as an Expert

Leveraging authority marketing is an important tool in building your position as an expert in your industry and creating new business opportunities. There are basically eight main categories of authority marketing strategies I will cover with you here.

Lead Generation

The first category is lead generation. I like to create value for my blog readers and social media followers in the form of ebooks, success kits, podcasts, and other forms of information that solves their problems. By giving away this free information and adding value to my audiences I can in return ask for their email address to access it and build my email list and leads.

Public Relations

A second form of authority marketing is leveraging free media publicity using public relations. By offering your expertise to reporters, writers, and interviewers you can find yourself in the spotlight. Public relations is an important tool to be used to spread your message without having to pay for advertising.

Event Marketing

Events and event marketing is another form of authority marketing that can be very effective in not only building your lead list but also for finding your ideal customers and buyers. You can host your own events or offer to speak at other organizations events for increased exposure for your business as well as additional revenue sources.

Content Marketing

The type of authority marketing that I personally enjoy the most is content marketing. If you’re struggling to make sense of what to post on social media in a way that can grow your business content marketing is the answer. You could begin by writing a blog post for your website either every week or every month and then sharing that blog post to your social media accounts. Again this is another way of providing excellent value to your audience.

Public Speaking

The fifth way of leveraging authority marketing is in public speaking. Well public speaking is the number one most common fear I believe it is the number one most effective thing that you can do to grow your business effectively. I encourage you to invest in yourself as a public speaker and to obtain the training Jen provided inspiration and motivation.and confidence you need to feel comfortable speaking either in front of a group we’re on camera. This will be key to your success as a rock star professional. 

 

Referral Marketing

Referral marketing is the next category of authority marketing that you should play close attention to. Referral marketing is finding Key strategic partners or joint venture partners that have the same audience as you do but are in a different non-competing business category. By working together and leveraging your joint expertise and audience lists you can benefit each other by growing your business is to each other’s markets.

Book Authorship

The seventh type of authority marketing I’d like to discuss is book authorship. Writing a book can be a game changer in your business. Book authorship is very important if you have ambitions to become a paid professional public speaker, land media interviews at a high-level, or you could even use it as a sales tool to mail it to your targeted ideal prospects. With the advent of technology, writing and publishing your own book has become easy and fun.

Product Development

Product development is an important aspect of authority marketing that you should pay attention to if you’re looking to create new levels of freedom and fulfillment in your career. Product development entails taking your expertise and converting it into products that can be sold or given away for free to your target audience in an effort to grow your business. You could take your expertise as a consultant coach or service provider, and convert it into a book a DVD series, a web series, a physical product, or even a available on itunesworkshop. The important key here is to think about how you could work smarter and not harder by leveraging your expertise and scaling your business into new revenue streams.

Why Am I Telling You About This?

In closing, authority marketing is all about providing value to your audience. The more you share and give away your unique insights and expertise the more you will gain in return. 

Shifting Your Mindset

Authority marketing requires that you change your mindset away from focusing on the short term. To build a business with this type of marketing you need to think like a gardener. You’re planting seeds and watering so you can reap the harvest next season.

Inspired Mission Statement

And how you can find clarity in “The Why”

Doing Good

If your BOLD Vision defines where you’re going, then your Inspired Mission Statement defines how you will get there. It becomes a roadmap of sorts to keep you focused on your journey to becoming a Rockstar Professional.

A Rockstar Professional is one who has advanced from the ordinary and has become an industry standout. They have separated themselves from the competition because they are sharing their unique purpose, passions, and gifts with the world.

When a business has been living a rich and giving mission, the community stands behind it and supports it. People want to do business with companies that do good.

The values of a company, and “doing good,” are communicated through the company’s vision and most importantly, the Inspired mission.

Even if you’re marketing for a company and it’s not your business, it is helpful to have a defined mission statement. Do you know the company’s mission?

If not, then this exercise can be shared with your manager, director, or boss and you will look like a hero!

How To Craft Your Inspired Mission Statement

To understand how to craft your inspired mission, we need to know the answer to this question:

Who do you work with, what do they want and why?

Take a moment to record your initial response to this vital question, trying to do so in 15 words or less by filling in the blanks.

I work with _______________________ who want to __________________ so they can

______________________________.

Recently, my business partners and I held a training with some key local influencers to test pilot the idea of a mastermind with them. Our conference room was filled with about 10 entrepreneurs at various stages of their careers. One gentlemen in particular, I will call him Ray, was feeling stuck on which direction he should take his business. He wanted to help everyone and was having a hard time finding focus.

I asked Ray to answer that question and a light bulb went off in his head! By answering the question he was able to narrow his focus and find clarity.

Personal Branding Speaker Jen DeVore Richter

This exercise is so important that many savvy business owners will put the statement on the front home page of their website. You can see mine at http://jendevore.rocks. (I won’t give away the answer here- it’s a little surprise for you.)

What is important to note is that this is not an ordinary mission statement. It is inspired. It is inspired because of the last section: the why. Knowing who you work with, what they need, and why is vital.

As a fun exercise, I took the McDonald’s mission statement and made it inspired:

Here is their existing mission:

McDonald’s brand mission is to be our customers’ favorite place and way to eat and drink.”

Here is my take on an inspired mission for them:

“At McDonald’s we work hard to provide your favorite place to eat and drink so you can focus on enjoying life.”

The difference is in adding “The Why” I need to bring my kids to McDonald’s as a busy working mom. It’s so we can enjoy life and not stress about meal prep.

Why am I Telling You This Story?

Because once you have your Inspired Mission clearly communicated, your marketing efforts will resonate with your audience.

The main takeaway here is that by answering “The Why”, you are now able to find focus and clarity instead of wanting to help everyone. Just like Ray! This “Why” will help you to stand out in your industry as a Rockstar Professional.

At church recently, I was speaking with a member of the congregation who is a woman business owner. She is actually a real estate agent and celebrating the one year anniversary of her business. She mentioned to me that she was in need of some marketing advice and since she was just starting was looking for some resources that could empower and educate herself. She wanted to learn how marketing could drive business growth.

We started talking about the value of podcasts and I mentioned to her that I have a podcast where I regularly share marketing and business advice with women business owners.

When I pulled up my podcast on her iTunes on her iPhone she asked me why I would put so much effort and work into sharing my ideas in the podcast.

I was happy to explain to her that through the sharing of my intellectual property my experience and my expertise, I was able to grow my audience online, increase the number of leads that come to my business, and find people that are my ideal client. Behind the Scenes with Jen DeVore

The importance of sharing your expertise and knowledge is in the relationships that are formed. When you are open to sharing your ideas and knowledge you are more likely to find customers and clients that will want to work with you. People want to do business with people that they know, like, and trust and by sharing your expertise you build those relationships.

There are numerous ways that you can share your expertise and grow your audience. You should examine each option and find the ways that match with your unique gifts and talents.

Here are a few examples of ways you can create content for your customers or clients:

  • Podcasting on Sound, iTunes, or your website
  • Writing books and getting them published
  • Producing videos and sharing them social media
  • Taking photos and putting them online
  • Creating ebooks or downloads for your website

Connecting With Your Audience

In this article, we’re going to be discussing how you can truly connect with your audience in ways that go beyond social media shout-outs, and blog post comments, with real life connections that have the potential to be life-changing.

Recently, I was on an airplane flying from Jacksonville to St. Louis for a speaking engagement. As I boarded the airplane early in the morning I realized that I was assigned the middle seat. The woman who was sitting by the window appeared to be having a very bad day when I struggled to put my belongings under my seat and dug the seat belt out of the seat cushions. I gave her a small smile and said good morning. She looked at me with a little bit of sadness on her face and I could tell that she was on the verge of tears. I asked her, “Are you okay?” and she said no. “I thought my flight was at 8 o’clock this morning,” she said,  “but it was actually at 8 o’clock tonight. So I’ve started my morning off frustrated trying to rearrange my flights and am just having a really bad day.”

Take Time To Listen

Her name was Layla and I listened as she told me story after story of how she felt like life was beating her down. She had lost her job recently. She was having problems with her relationships. And was searching for a purpose in her life. She told me that she really wanted to start a business but she lacked vision for how to do it. 

I felt when she said those words to me that God had put me in that middle seat at that time in the morning specifically to meet Layla and to be an encouragement to her.

I said to her you’re not going to believe this but I am in the Bold Vision business. I told her that I was on my way to the speaking engagement in St. Louis and that I had just written a book that helps people gain clarity over their lives and the direction of their business or career choices. Her eyes widened as I took a copy of my book out of my bag and handed it to her as a gift. She asked “Really? I can’t believe my luck! This is turning out to be the best day ever!” She smiled as she thumbed through the book and told me that she was so happy that her day had turned around and that I was sitting next to her. Layla and I had a great connection that morning on the airplane. I was able to be an encouragement to her using not only my personal friendship but also using my work and the purpose that I find as a speaker. What started out as a terrible day turned into a new connection and I hope a renewed sense of direction for Layla.

Use Your Influence to Lift Others Up

I am sharing this story with you to encourage you to look for real ways of connecting with your audience. When everyone else is wrapped up in social media followers and fans, we need to be focused on lifting each other up. available on itunes

Creating Your Claim to Fame

Working with business leaders as their business coach to craft their Claim to Fame is one of my favorite things to do in marketing. We take what is special about you and your business and create a one-sentence impact statement that will ensure you are memorable.

How to Create Your Claim to Fame

Here are a few examples of a Claim to Fame:

  1. Write a book
  2. Win an award
  3. Accomplish a major feat
  4. Obtain a special certification
  5. Do something unusual
  6. Develop a proven process or system

Proven ProcessProven Process

Last year I had a client named Maxine. Maxine is a business coach for the spa and beauty industry. She works with the owners of the spas or the aestheticians that provide skin care services. She helps them grow their business by better understanding the business side of what they do and provides marketing advice as well.

Maxine came to me because because she was looking for a way to differentiate herself in a competitive industry. The things that Maxine had going for her already were that she was very well known in the industry due to her media mentions and PR opportunities that she had been able to create for herself. She was also very well educated and credentialed and had great connections. So the area that I worked with Maxine on was developing her Claim to Fame which is actually her Proven Process.

Your Proven Process is not what you do but how you do it. It is your secret sauce or special approach to working with your clients.

Maxine shared with me how she works with her client and I was able to break it down into a five step process. We were even able to take each step of the process and align it to her last name which is Drake. We developed what is now known as the Drake approach to business coaching for spa professionals. Maxine was able to leverage this unique positioning and the Drake approach to grow her business sellout workshops, and was she is enjoying more recognition in her industry.

How to Write Your Proven Process

Step 1. Write down the main problem that you solve for your customers. This is the solution you provide:

Step 2: Write down HOW you do this. Not the services you provide, but how you do it. There may be multiple steps in the process.

Step 3: Narrow down the steps to 6 or fewer combining similar items into categories and eliminating those that are redundant.

Step 4: Take the steps and try to sum each up in 1-3 words. Write them here:

Step 5: Look at the words and see if there is a theme emerging that can be turned into an acronym. Be creative and just brainstorm. Write them down.

Step 6: Once you have your theme or acronym finalize it. available on itunes

Crafting your Claim to Fame around your Proven Approach will give you another way to stand out and communicate your unique approach and value.

Marketing using your Claim to Fame will require that you have a mindset away from selling on price. You will instead focus on what really matters, which is your set of unique gifts, talents, experience, and expertise.

Story Telling has become a powerful tool in marketing because technology has leveled the playing field. Technology in the palm of our hands has enabled brands both big and small to be able to reach new audiences, spread their messages farther, and create movements around their businesses.

According to a recent article in Forbes Magazine, storytelling is important in this new economy for brand engagement and the best way to engage your audience members and potential customers or clients is  by tapping into their emotions. Stories are the mechanism for building emotional engagement with your brand.

If you are looking to build a Purpose Filled Business this means that you are mission-driven. You have a message to share, a movement to create, and something bigger than you to build. Stories to Grow Your Business

Let me use a story to demonstrate how stories can be used to grow your business. This week I launched a new service offering in my company Rock My Image. It is called VIP Days.

In a VIP Day, a client gets to work with me one-on-one for either a half-day or full-day to focus on a marketing issue that has been frustrating them. As I was beginning to create the marketing pieces for this new VIP Day, I stopped to take a moment and reflect on a recent client success story that I have that would demonstrate the value of working with me one-on-one as a coach. Fortunately, I have had a very big success with one of my clients named April.

April is the marketing manager for a very high-profile attorney and April had been very frustrated with her social media and blogging efforts. She was feeling overwhelmed because she never knew what to write each month and was spinning her wheels trying to get content created on a regular basis. Your Stories Matter

Stories matter in companies because they build a legacy that can be passed down much like a family history can be passed down. When the influencers inside your company know the stories and are able to communicate them they can build your company’s legacy for you .

So telling your stories and creating a collection of company stories is vital. It is very important for you to tell the stories of your clients and customers, those of your successes, and even those of your failures, in order to build that emotional connection and impact.

Being Relatable is Key

Being relatable is key. You must share stories that your audience can relate to. They need to be able to see themselves inside the story or it needs to be universally appealing. Your company story should not be “inside jokes” or  “you had to be there moments.”

Build a Library of Stories

The best way to ensure that your company stories are used effectively is to build a library. You can use a simple system like Google Documents, Evernote, or another text editing documentation system that lives in the cloud, in order to ensure that you were leadership and customer services teams most importantly, have access to them. 

It will also be important for you to record your brand and business stories on video so that they can be shared on social media and an email marketing or anywhere content lives on the internet and your audience is listening.

Why am I Telling You This Story and Giving You This Exercise?

I am giving you this information to inspire you to begin to think about how you can document the stories of your brand. You already have these stories at your disposal. They may just be locked away in your memories somewhere. The other key that you will want to do when you document your stories is to match them up with the problems that the story demonstrates and that you solve. You can easily index your library of stories by key terms in order to make this process easy and fun.

Shifting Your Mindset

Beginning to tell a brand story is going to require a mindset shift. It is going to require that you move away from only focusing on your services, or the features and benefits of your product. While those things are important for you to communicate in your marketing, remember: stories sell.

Actions You Should Take

The action that I would like for you to take this week is to think of one problem that your business or brand solves for  your customers and think of one story from your company’s history that demonstrate how you solved that problem for someone else. Be sure to write this down the story and if you’re feeling ambitious record it on video and share it with your social media followers. Becoming a Great Leader

Here is why this is an important topic for you to know.

As business owners, entrepreneurs, and women in business, it is important for us to recognize that in order to get to a position where we can inspire and influence others and share our message, we need to be in a position of leadership.

Being a leader instead of a do-er frees you up from working IN the business to working ON the business. Working ON the business is an important step to take if your goal is to make an impact on others.

My Experience Story

When I started my entrepreneurial journey 12 years ago I made the mistake of trying to do everything myself. While I did have a small team of assistants that I had hired and trained, the mistake that I made was not building in the systems that I needed in order for the business to run without me in it.

My assistants were fantastic at helping me with specific projects, working specific events, and doing the tasks that were assigned as they came up. They were fun people to be around they kept me inspired and we all had a wonderful time working together. Where I went wrong was that I failed to create implement and document systems for every part of my business so that the team could run the business without me there to manage them.

Another mistake I made was that I had built a brand around my name so clients would only hire my company if I personally was the one that was providing the service. I had failed to build a brand that could be converted into an Empire.  I had built a company based on my personal reputation and connections and created a nice job for myself within the business. But I had failed to build a self-sustaining company.

There are basically two components that every entrepreneur, business owner, or business professional needs to be a leader in their company. These two items are status and systems. Behind the Scenes with Jen DeVore

Status Matters

Status is your personal brand and how you are perceived in your industry. It is important to build a personal brand and reputation that positions you as an expert and a thought leader in your industry. Once you are seen as the authority in your space you will be able to spread your message to a wider audience and be given platforms from which to share your ideas.

Systems are Key

Systems are vital so that you can be active in working on your business as the Visionary and person in control of your company’s mission, culture and impact. Systems will allow you to scale and replicate the processes that you use in your company. Once you have systems in place team members can be trained to do things the way you want them to be done in order to achieve the result you desire.

Without status and systems together you will lack the ability to build a business that runs without you managing the day-to-day operations.

With status and systems together you will be able to build an Empire and team around you so that you can spread your message, start your movement and make a difference in the world.

If you are at the point where you are too busy working in your business or at your job to lift your head up raise your eyes and focus on the future ahead then you need to make a change and begin to elevate your status and create systems in your business.

Know Your Core Competencies

In order to build your brand and develop systems that will create your Empire you will need to know your core competencies so that you can leverage your strengths in your brand and business and hire talented people to help you fill the gaps with your weaknesses. For example if writing is not your favorite thing to do then it would be wise to invest in a professional copywriter and editor to help you express your ideas. Another example would be if accounting managing your books makes you cringe then it would be smart to hire a professional bookkeeper to help you manage your finances. By taking an inventory of your key competencies you’ll begin to see which tasks in your business need to be outsourced immediately and which tap you may consider doing yourself.

Why am I Telling You This Story and Giving You This Exercise?

I am sharing this information with you so that you won’t make the mistake that I made 12 years ago. My goal is to save you lots of time, lots of money and enable you to the fulfill your purpose. By elevating your status and developing systems that your team can run for you, you will be able to achieve your goals.

Shifting Your Mindset

Elevating your status and developing systems will require that you change your mindset. Your mindset will need to be changed away from feeling like you are the only person that can work in your business. If you are a little bit of a control freak or type A personality that likes everything done just so, this is going to be tough for you. But you are probably the person that needs to hear this message the most. I say this with love because I used to be like that. I thought that my way was the best way. By creating systems for how I wanted things done and implementing a training program that my team could follow I’ve been able to achieve The Best of Both Worlds. I get things done the way that I want them to be done but other people do the work for me. This frees me up just focus on empowering women on their intro entrepreneurial journey and fulfilling my purpose in the world.

Actions You Should Take

The action that I want you to take this week is to create a list of 5 things that you could delegate out that will move your business forward. Take an hour or two and think about the top marketing tactics that you are doing currently in your business that you could hire someone else to do. Then make the time to outline a system for each of the five marketing tactics keeping in mind the goal that you will outsource or hire someone to implement the system for you. These could be writing your blog posts, designing your newsletters, scheduling your social media posts, editing video or audio files, or creating graphics for marketing materials.
